BBQ & Hot Rods at Irvine Lake

This is the thirty-second year that the Outriders Car Club has hosted this amazing picnic event in Southern California.

Formed in 1932 in the Hollywood/Glendale area the Outriders is one of the oldest clubs in Southern California, and is limited to just 50 members. For this year’s picnic 1,000 entry tickets were distributed by the club. Lovely Oak Meadow Park at Irvine Lake was the site of the picnic and temperatures were warm in the 90s. Large oak trees provided much needed shade for the 400-plus cars parked on the grass.  A permanent stage in the park served a great live band that played early rock tunes all day long. Liquid refreshment and a delicious tri-tip lunch was served to visitors by club members. It seemed as though raffle numbers were called out all day long. This was definitely a picnic to remember.

Larry Wood owns this big-block Nash-powered ’32 Nash.
This street legal Sprint Car is a small-block Chevy-powered ’89 Lightning driven by Roy Walter of Downey, CA.

An open-wheeled 351 Ford-powered ’32 Ford five-window belongs to Colby Newett of Costa Mesa, CA.

A slightly dirty ’55 Chevy arrived a little late from Sacramento, CA.

The crowd gathers fast when Andi Humbnil fires-up his blown fuel Hemi nostalgia Top Fuel dragster with his dad in the seat.

Outriders historian Ed Newett brought his original plaque and pictures of some of his cars.

A great live band played early rock throughout the day.
BBQ chefs kept the tri-tips coming to the hungry crowd.
