23rd Annual California Hot Rod Reunion

Racing, Cacklefest, iconic drag racers and vehicles: the California Hot Rod Reunion (CHRR), it just doesn’t get any better than this. If we were living in the late ’60s this event would be labeled as a “happening.” Don’t get us wrong, the racing portion features very serious competition, but there’s just so much more. This is the perfect venue to meet up with competitors from the golden age of drag racing. The late Raymond Beadle’s entire crew, Dale Emery, “Waterbed Fred” Miller and D Gantt were in attendance, just to name a few. Sadly, the numbers are dwindling, so don’t wait another year to attend.

This is the perfectvenueto meetupwith competitors fromthegolden ageofdrag racing.

Dan Horan had former Frank Hawley driving instructor “Fast Jack” Beckman providing some driving tips, which helped him secure the F/C title.
Tony Bartone throttled the Heritage Series T/F troops this season. He won all rounds, all races—it was quite a feat.
West Coast Pro Mod stalwart Mike Maggio defeated Rob Cacioppo for the CHRR championship.

Even with the plethora of activities, racing always takes center stage. Simply by their sheer numbers, Nostalgia Funny Car is the premiere class. More than 30 nitro floppers clogged the pits, vying for a spot in the hellaciously competitive 16-car field. Dan Horan finally got the CHRR monkey off his back by defeating former champ John Hale, in the final round. He also captured the Funny Car season title in NHRA’s Hot Rod Heritage Series. This double up was very special for Horan because it was his last race with his crew chief Ron Swearingen. He and Swearingen have been together for the past three years.

Former CHRR champ John Hale made it to the finals yet again, but Horan was a hurdle too great for him to overcome.
In a battle of cross-country rivals, Rick White handed Tony Bartone the event win by serving up a red light in the final round.
Schumacher Racing VP Mike Lewis experienced a catastrophic engine explosion in the Nitro Nick F/C during qualifying, launching the body high into the air. The crew did an amazing job of patching the pieces back together for Sunday eliminations.

In Nostalgia Top Fuel, Tony Bartone continued his dominance in this season’s NHRA Heritage Series. By defeating Rick White in the CHRR final round, he “ran the table,” winning every round and every race in the five-event series.

During the course of the event, eight categories were contested: Pro Mod was taken by Mike Maggio; the Junior Fuel title was taken by Don Enriquez; A/Fuel winner and 7.0 Pro winner was Bobby Cottrell; 7.0 Pro B winner was Jesse Adams; Nostalgia Eliminator 1 was taken by Jason Barta; A/Gas winner was Eric Bush and A/FX was won by Doug Hampton.

Don Enriquez continues to be the gold standard for Jr. Fuel. He defeated J. D. Zink for the CHRR title and also secured his third straight NHRA Heritage Series win.
Bobby Cottrel nabbed the 7.0 Pro crown when Elly Stafford dipped into the sixes in the final match up.
The A/F finals saw Cottrel once again victorious, as Bill Wayne fouled away his chance for the win.
A/F stand out Dr. Kin Bates also did double duty at the CHRR, competing in his usual A/F ride and also in the KLM Racing NE 1 entry.
Brian Rogers, the newly crowned Heritage Series A/G champ, showed strong at the CHRR race.
The Fomoso Speed Shop’s very swoopy 7.0 Pro Black Betty drew plenty of attention.
Jordan Pawlick made the long trek down from Canada and managed to qualify the Nitro Militia in the ultra-competitive F/C field.
This just screams CHRR, a vintage, cherry Jr. Fueler being push-started by a taildraggin’ station wagon.
The Iron Maiden boils the hides much to the delight of the Bakersfield crowd.
